He used brass rings (from the craft store) with beads threaded on them for the electrons and orbitals, and suspended one of those plastic cases you get a "prize" in from the grocery store entryways for $0.25 to be his nucleus in the center with pom-poms jammed inside for protons and neutrons. All in all, it was the most professional looking project I have received.
